What each number means
Words
Whitespace-separated tokens that contain a letter or digit, so “well-known” counts once and a lone dash counts zero. CJK characters are counted individually.
Characters with spaces
Grapheme-aware via Intl.Segmenter, so an emoji or flag counts as one character instead of two or four code units.
Characters without spaces
The same count with spaces, tabs and line breaks removed — the figure some forms and CMS fields ask for.
Sentences
Text split after . ! ? and the CJK enders 。！？, ignoring empty fragments.
Paragraphs & lines
Paragraphs are blank-line blocks (falling back to non-empty lines for single-spaced text); lines are hard line breaks.
Reading & speaking time
Words ÷ words-per-minute, shown as mm:ss. Estimates, not promises — adjust the speeds above.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. The counter runs entirely in your browser — there is no account, no request to a server and no storage. Close the tab and the text is gone.
Why is my word count different from Word or Google Docs?
Editors disagree on hyphenated words, numbers and symbols. This counter treats a hyphenated word as one word and ignores tokens made only of punctuation. Differences of one or two words are normal.
Does an exact-limit count pass?
Yes. A 280-character post shows “fits (exactly at the limit)” and the bar turns red only once you are one character over. The same applies to 160, 60 and 2,200.
How do emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean text count?
Characters use grapheme segmentation, so one emoji is one character. CJK characters are counted as individual words and the page flags that word counts for scripts without spaces are approximate.
Is there an input size limit?
There is a 1 MB soft cap (1,048,576 characters) to keep the page responsive; above it the counter analyses the first 1 MB and tells you so inline.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The stat tiles stack into two columns, the limit presets scroll horizontally and the compact words/chars bar stays pinned to the top of the counter while the keyboard is open.
