What actually happens when you press Convert

It walks through four real stages: demux (unpack the WebM container), decode (turn compressed frames back into pictures), encode (compress them again as H.264, with audio going to AAC), and mux (wrap everything into an MP4). The honest consequence is that this is a re-encode, not a container swap. A true remux would be near-instant and completely lossless, but it would only work if your video were already H.264 inside a WebM shell, which almost never happens. So expect two things: conversion takes real time and real CPU/GPU, and the picture is re-compressed once. At Balanced quality most people cannot tell, but it is not a zero-cost operation and we do not pretend otherwise.

Because everything runs locally, your file never leaves your device. That matters more than it sounds — screen recordings routinely contain email inboxes, API keys, customer names, and half-finished slides you would rather not hand to an anonymous upload endpoint.

Resolution and quality: the two settings that decide your output

Resolution offers Keep original, 1080p, 720p and 480p — and it never upscales. Choosing 1080p for a 720p source does not invent detail, it just leaves 720p alone. Downscaling is the riskier direction: a screen recording of text, code, or a dense spreadsheet becomes genuinely unreadable at 480p, because thin UI strokes lose more than photographic detail does. Keep original unless you are fighting a hard file-size or upload limit.

Quality sets a bitrate target: High at 8 Mbps, Balanced at 4, Small at 1.5. The tool clamps these to a sane bits-per-pixel range for the resolution you picked, so clicking High at 480p will not spray 8 Mbps at a tiny frame — it is not a free quality dial. A little arithmetic helps here: 1920×1080 at 30 fps is roughly 62 million pixels per second, so 4 Mbps works out to about 0.064 bits per pixel. That is comfortable for slides, screen shares, and static UI, and noticeably thin for grainy handheld camera footage.

Frame rate and the MediaRecorder duration oddity

Frame rate defaults to Keep original, and we would leave it there for most screen recordings. The tool drops frames when you ask for 30 or 24, and it never duplicates frames. Setting 30 on a source that was captured at 12 fps does not make it smoother; it just describes the same content with a different label. Going the other way — 60 down to 30 — does cut data meaningfully, which is a legitimate way to shrink a gaming or demo clip.

One thing that confuses people: WebM files produced by MediaRecorder often carry no duration in their header, so desktop players show a nonsensical length or an infinity symbol. Our demuxer reads duration from the file itself and tolerates missing or infinite values rather than refusing the job. If the ETA looks strange for the first few seconds on a file like this, that is why — not a stall.

Audio, and the muted-output fallback you should watch for

Audio converts to AAC at 128 kbps stereo. Opus and Vorbis cannot be copied into an MP4 as-is for broad compatibility, so they get decoded and re-encoded. If your source was already lossy, that is one more generation of loss — usually inaudible for speech and screen narration, more noticeable on music. The audio toggle is useful when you only need the visuals.

There is one edge case worth knowing: if your browser does not expose an AAC encoder through WebCodecs, the tool falls back to producing a muted MP4 and tells you so in the result summary. That is graceful rather than silent failure, but it means you should read the result line instead of assuming sound is there. Open the downloaded file before sending it to a client or uploading it somewhere that matters.

Check the result before you delete the original

After conversion you get a download button plus a summary showing input size versus output size, source codec versus output codec, and a shrink percentage. Treat a negative number as information, not an error: a lean VP9 source at low bitrate can easily grow when re-encoded to H.264 at 4 Mbps. If size matters, step down to 720p or Small and compare two runs.

A few habits save grief. Rename the file in the filename field before converting — path characters get stripped and .mp4 is forced, so you might as well move that into your asset folder immediately. Close heavyweight browser tabs while a long conversion runs, since encoding competes for the same CPU. Verify duration and audio in a player, then archive the original .webm anyway; re-encoding always loses a little, and the source is your only master copy.
