Mixed-orientation merges look intentional only when the bars are consistent throughout.

The real-time recording caveat — and why your tab must stay open

Because the merge is captured with MediaRecorder, it takes roughly as long as the total duration of your clips. A four-minute sequence takes about four minutes to produce. This is normal for browser-side capture and it is the price of zero upload, but it surprises people who expect a progress bar that races to 100% in ten seconds. Plan for it: start the merge, then do something else in another window.

Keep the tab visible and in the foreground. Browsers throttle timers and rendering in background tabs, which can cause dropped frames, audio drift or a stalled recording. Do not put the laptop to sleep, and do not navigate away mid-export — there is no partial file to recover. Also make sure you have enough free memory: a 1080p recording of a long merge produces a sizeable blob held in the page until you download it.

The output container depends on your browser. Chromium and Firefox typically produce WebM; Safari may offer MP4 where it supports the codec path. The sweet spot is two to six short clips that need to become one file with no editing. Lecture segments recorded in separate takes. A product demo captured in chunks because the recorder has a time limit. Several phone videos from an event that you want to send as a single attachment. Gameplay or screen-capture fragments you intend to upload as one item. In each case the file sizes stay comfortably under the 200 MB per-clip limit and the total runtime is short enough that a real-time export is tolerable.

Two operational habits make the results better. First, normalise audio yourself before merging if the levels are wildly different — this tool mixes the tracks but does not apply gain or loudness matching, so a quiet clip next to a loud one will stay that way. Second, name your files in the order you intend to merge them (take-01, take-02) so the default selection order is already correct and you only have to verify it.

Be honest about the limits. There is no trimming, no crossfades, no watermark, no text overlay, no frame-accurate cut. Anything that needs precise editing belongs in a real editor, and anything long enough to make a real-time export painful probably does too.
