How the Tool Compresses: a Quality Search, Not a Guess

You drop or pick one photo — JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 20 MB — and the compressor starts at the top of the quality range (0.92) and steps down toward 0.4, keeping the largest result that still lands at or under your target. If quality alone cannot get there, auto mode reduces the long edge further. The defaults are 30 KB and 1600 px on the long edge; the target clamps between 5 and 500 KB with quick chips at 20, 30, 50 and 100, and the dimension field accepts 200–4000 px.

Everything runs inside the browser. Your photo is never uploaded to a server, there is no account, no watermark and no queue — you get a download button that returns a file named after the original with a "-30kb" suffix.

Two behaviours are worth knowing before you start. PNG transparency is flattened onto white, which matters if you are compressing a cut-out signature or a logo on a transparent background. And HEIC files are rejected outright, because browsers cannot decode them reliably; if you shoot on an iPhone, either switch the camera to "Most Compatible" or export the photo as JPEG first.

Common Mistakes That Cost You Upload Attempts

The most frequent mistake we see is re-compressing a screenshot. If you open a photo on your phone, screenshot it, and then compress the screenshot, you have already discarded detail and added a second round of JPEG artifacts before the tool ever runs. Start from the original file whenever it still exists.

Next: trusting the file extension. Renaming a .webp to .jpg does not change the format, and many portals inspect the actual file header. Then there is the dimension trap. Leaving the long edge at 1600 px is convenient, but if the form wants a 600 × 600 face photo, you are spending your whole 30 KB budget on pixels nobody will see. Set the long edge to match the requirement instead, then let quality do the rest.

Finally, check the badge, not the filename. The result card shows the actual output size and the achieved dimensions; that size figure has to read 30 KB or less. A file called "photo-30kb.jpg" proves nothing on its own.

Reading the Before → After Report

After each run you get a summary: original size, new size, percentage saved, and how many quality iterations the search used. A high iteration count is not a failure — it means the compressor worked hard to stay under the ceiling — but it is a signal that the image is close to the limit of what 30 KB can hold.

If the panel says "already under target", the file was not re-encoded at all. That is good news: re-saving it through another editor would only add artifacts. Download the untouched copy and move on.

Honest caveat: at 30 KB, thin lines, small print and fine hair detail will soften, and no compressor can avoid that — it is a consequence of the byte budget, not a bug. If the result looks unusable for a scanned signature or a document photo, the practical fix is fewer pixels rather than more compression. Drop the long edge until quality settles higher, and inspect the preview thumbnail before you download.

When 30 KB Is the Wrong Number
