The step-by-step walkthrough

Set the unit first. This is the single most important habit, because the unit selector applies to both the length and the width at the same time. If you enter 12 in the length field while the selector still says ft, then switch to m afterwards, the tool will faithfully recalculate a 12-metre by 10-metre room — 1,076 sq ft more than you meant. Pick ft, in, m or cm before you start typing.

Next, enter the length and width as decimals, not as fractions. A room that measures 12 feet 6 inches is 12.5 with the unit set to ft. A tile that is 300 mm on a side is 30 with the unit set to cm. Both fields accept decimals and reject anything at or below zero, and each dimension is capped at 100,000 in whatever unit you have chosen, which is far beyond any household or plot measurement you are likely to enter.

Then set the quantity. This is a whole number between 1 and 999, and it multiplies the area, not each dimension. Three identical rooms of 12 by 10 gives the readable summary line "12 ft × 10 ft × 3 rooms = 360 sq ft". Finally, if you have a rate, type it into the rate-per-sq-ft field. Reading the two area figures without confusing them

The tool shows square feet as the primary figure and square metres as the secondary one, because both are in daily use in India — flooring catalogues often quote per sq ft while land documents and municipal records lean towards sq m. The conversion the calculator uses is the standard one: one square metre equals 10.7639 square feet, and one square foot equals 0.092903 square metres.

A quick sanity check you can do in your head: a 120 sq ft room is a little over 11 sq m, because 120 × 0.092903 ≈ 11.15. Going the other way, a 3 m by 4 m room is 12 sq m, which is 12 × 10.7639 ≈ 129.17 sq ft. If your result is out by a factor of roughly ten, you almost certainly left the unit selector on the wrong setting rather than making an arithmetic error.

It helps to keep the two figures tied to their purpose. Price per sq ft is what most Indian flooring, tiling and painting contractors quote, so the sq ft figure drives your cost row. Working in inches, centimetres and metres

Inches trip people up more than any other unit. There is no way to type "12 ft 6 in" as a single entry, so convert before you enter: multiply the inches by 0.0833, or just divide by 12, and add that to the feet. Alternatively, switch the unit to inches and enter 150 for that same length. Remember that areas scale by the square of the linear conversion — one square foot is 144 square inches, not 12.

Centimetres are common for tiles, where a 600 mm by 600 mm tile is 60 by 60 in cm, giving 3,600 sq cm per tile, or 3.87 sq ft. If you are pricing by the tile rather than by the area, use the calculator for the room area in sq ft first, then divide by the per-tile figure to get the count. Square centimetres and square metres relate by 10,000, which is another easy place to lose a factor of ten.

Metres are the least error-prone option for anything large: a 30 ft by 40 ft plot is 1,200 sq ft, and the same plot in metric is roughly 9.14 m by 12.19 m, or about 111.5 sq m. Turning area into a real purchase quantity

The cost row is deliberately simple: total area multiplied by your rate. What it does not do is add waste, and waste is where most flooring and tiling budgets go wrong. Cutting around doorways, corners and irregular edges means you rarely install the exact measured area. A common working allowance is 5% for simple rectangular rooms laid in a straight pattern, and 10% or more for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with many alcoves.

Where this tool stops, and what to verify

This calculator handles rectangles and multiples of rectangles. An L-shaped room should be split into two rectangles, measured separately, and added — or run twice and sum the two results. Sloped ceilings, bay windows and curved walls will not give you a usable single figure, and the tool makes no attempt to guess. Round or triangular areas need their own formulas before you come here for the cost.

It also does not speak in local land units. A gaj is 9 sq ft, a cent is 435.6 sq ft, and a gunta is 1,089 sq ft, so convert to square feet first and then enter the equivalent length and width, or simply multiply the area yourself and use the rate field as a check. The rate input also accepts only a per-square-foot figure; if your supplier quotes per square metre, multiply by 10.7639 before entering it, or read your cost off the sq m figure instead.

Finally, treat every number here as a planning estimate. Tape measurements taken at skirting level can differ from measurements at the widest point of a room by several inches, and that difference multiplies across a large floor. Measure twice, round your order up rather than down, and confirm the final quantity with your supplier or contractor before money changes hands.
