What the calculator is actually doing
A GPA is not an average of your grades in the everyday sense — it is a credit-weighted average of grade points. Each course contributes its grade value multiplied by its credit hours, and the total is divided by the total credit hours counted. That is why a 4-credit lecture course pulls your number around four times as hard as a 1-credit lab, even if the letter grade is identical.

The tool also does three things a plain weighted average does not: it carries over a prior GPA to give you a cumulative figure, it lets you set a target and work backwards, and if your school uses a UK scale it translates between percentages and a 4.0-style value.
Step 1: pick the grading scale that matches your transcript
There are four options: US 4.0 (A = 4.0, no plus/minus), US 4.0 with plus/minus, UK percentage (0–100), and UK honours band. Pick the one your registrar actually uses, because the choice changes the arithmetic, not just the label.
On the flat US 4.0 scale, an A− is worth the same 4.0 as an A. On the plus/minus scale it is a 3.7, a B+ is 3.3, a B− is 2.7. If your institution publishes plus/minus grades and you leave the tool on the flat scale, every A− on your sheet is quietly inflated. That single mismatch is the most common reason a student's own calculation comes out higher than the official one.
For UK users, the percentage scale accepts marks like 68 or 72 directly and shows the equivalent position on a 4.0-style scale, while the honours-band option is for when you only know the band. First is 70 and above, 2:1 is 60–69, 2:2 is 50–59, Third is 40–49 — the tool's grade-band ladder highlights where your current figure sits.
Step 2: enter your courses, one row per course
You start with three empty rows and can go up to 24; blank rows are ignored, so it is fine to leave spares sitting there. Credits accept decimals between 0.5 and 30 — a half-credit music ensemble or a 0.5-credit PE requirement is entered as 0.5, not rounded up to 1.
Here is a real-shaped term. Intro Statistics, B, 4 credits = 12.0 quality points. Organic Chemistry, B+, 3 credits = 9.9. Writing Seminar, A−, 3 credits = 11.1. Chemistry Lab, A, 1 credit = 4.0. That is 37.0 quality points over 11 credits, so the headline GPA is 3.36 — a solid B+ term, and notice how the 1-credit lab barely moves the needle despite the A.
If you change that lab to a C (2.0 × 1 = 2.0), the total drops to 35.0 over 11 credits, or 3.18. Change the 4-credit statistics grade to a C instead and you land at 3.09. Same letter, very different damage — which is the lesson the per-course contribution column is there to teach.
Step 3: add your prior GPA to get the cumulative number
The optional prior GPA field takes a value between 0.00 and 5.00, and prior credits must be greater than zero — if you enter a prior GPA without credits, the tool hides the cumulative output rather than guessing at a denominator.
The cumulative formula is the one registrars use: (prior GPA × prior credits + this term's quality points) ÷ (prior credits + this term's credits). Say you came in with a 3.10 over 45 credits, which is 139.5 quality points. Add the 37.0 from the term above and you have 176.5 quality points over 56 credits, a cumulative 3.15.
That is a useful reality check. A good term lifted a long record by five hundredths of a point. Students are often surprised by how slow the cumulative figure moves once the denominator is large, and how much faster it moves in first year when there are only 15 or 30 credits on the books. Step 4: set a target and see what you actually need
Enter a target GPA (0.00–4.00) and your remaining credits, and the tool switches into what-do-I-need mode. It computes how many quality points you still have to earn across those credits, then divides by the remaining credits to give the average grade you would need. It also prints a plain feasible or not-feasible verdict, so you are not left decoding a number that was never going to happen.
Sticking with the example: target 3.40, with 30 credits left. Total credits at the end would be 86, so you need 3.40 × 86 = 292.4 quality points. You already have 176.5, leaving 115.9 over 30 credits — an average of about 3.86, roughly straight A− work with almost no room for a B. That is demanding but not impossible, and knowing the figure in October is more useful than discovering it in April.
Two honest caveats. The panel assumes you take exactly the remaining credits you typed, and that every course counts the same way in this formula. If you drop a course, take a heavier load, or repeat a class under a replacement-grade policy, the required average shifts — usually in your favour with a lighter load, against you with a heavier one.
Common mistakes, and where the tool stops
The most frequent error is counting courses instead of credits: four courses with four different grades is not a GPA, and averaging grade points unweighted will be wrong unless every course happens to carry the same hours. The second is including pass/fail, credit/no-credit, or transferred courses — those typically carry credits but no grade points, and mixing them in distorts both the numerator and the denominator. The third is re-using a grade from a course you repeated, when your school's policy may replace it or average both attempts.
On the UK side, treat the classification as approximate. Honours degrees are usually computed from weighted marks that favour later years, and some programmes apply borderline rules or discount the lowest module. A percentage-scale GPA equivalent is a useful orientation, not a verdict, and the same goes for the 4.0-style conversion the tool displays. The reference point for anything that matters is your registrar's office and your official transcript, not any calculator.
One last thing worth checking: many universities set a minimum GPA to satisfy satisfactory academic progress for financial aid, and that threshold is defined by your school, not by a national standard. The U.S. Department of Education publishes the framework schools work within, and it is worth reading alongside your own handbook if you are anywhere near the line.
