College GPA Calculator: Credit-Weighted GPA, Cumulative Carry-Over and What You Still Need

What the calculator actually does with your grade sheet
We built the College GPA Calculator for one specific moment: you have a grade sheet open in another tab and you want a single trustworthy number before you close the laptop. Enter each course as a grade plus a credit-hour value, and the headline GPA updates on every keystroke — no signup, no email, no waiting for a portal to refresh.
The arithmetic is the standard credit-weighted average. Every grade maps to grade points on the scale you choose, that value is multiplied by the course's credit hours, and the sum of those products is divided by the total credits counted. A 4-credit course therefore pulls the average roughly four times as hard as a 1-credit course — which is exactly why a weak grade in a weekly lab hurts less than the same grade in a lecture you sit three times a week.
Four scales are available: plain US 4.0 (A = 4.0), US 4.0 with plus/minus grades, UK percentages from 0–100, and UK honours bands. Switching scales recalculates immediately rather than forcing you to re-enter anything, so you can flip between a letter-grade view and a percentage view of the same term.
Entering a real schedule without fighting the form
Most of the friction in GPA math isn't the math, it's transcription. The form accepts 1 to 24 course rows, credit hours between 0.5 and 30 including decimals such as 1.5 or 3.5, and it quietly ignores any row you leave blank — so you can start from the three default rows and keep adding until your schedule runs out.
The most common entry error we see is putting the number of courses where credit hours belong. Four courses is not four credits; if your term is 12 credits across four courses, those four rows must add up to 12, not 4. The second most common mistake is leaving a repeated course in twice. Under most university policies the retake replaces the earlier grade, and if you keep both rows the older, lower grade will drag your average down unfairly.
Once the rows are in, the results panel stays put while you scroll the course table: running GPA, the letter grade or UK band, and the total credits counted. There is no submit button. The calculation happens in the browser as you type, which is the whole reason the input-to-number loop feels fast enough to use mid-lecture.
Cumulative GPA: why one good term moves less than you hope
Real academic records rarely start from a clean slate, so the tool includes optional prior GPA and prior credit fields. Supply both and it computes a cumulative GPA rather than a term GPA: prior grade points (prior GPA × prior credits) are added to the points from the courses you just entered, and the total is divided by all credits combined.
Here is a worked example we use when sanity-checking the tool. Say your transcript shows 3.10 over 45 completed credits, and this term brings Calculus II (4 credits, B), Intro Psychology (3 credits, A), English Composition (3 credits, B+ on the plus/minus scale) and a Chemistry lab (1 credit, A−). Term points are 12 + 12 + 9.9 + 3.7 = 37.6 over 11 credits, so the term GPA reads 3.42. Cumulative: (139.5 + 37.6) ÷ 56 = 3.16. That gap is the lesson — a strong term only bends an established record gradually, and the tool shows it instead of hiding it.
Leave either prior field empty and the cumulative output simply disappears rather than guessing. If you enter a prior GPA you must also enter prior credits: a GPA without a credit count isn't a weighted average, and any cumulative figure built from it would be quietly wrong.
The target panel: what the rest of the semester has to look like
The optional target panel answers the question people actually ask in week eight — what does the remainder of the year need to look like? Set a target GPA and a remaining credit count, and the tool solves the weighted average backwards across those remaining credits.
Same numbers as before: 3.16 cumulative over 56 credits, targeting 3.30 overall with 30 credits left. The final total will be 86 credits, so you need 3.30 × 86 = 283.8 points. You already have 177.1, which leaves 106.7 points across 30 credits — an average of 3.56, roughly an A−/B+ mix. The tool then labels that feasible or not against the top of the scale you selected. An impossible ask, such as 3.90 with a 20-credit remainder, gets flagged before you build a plan around it.
Two honest caveats. The calculation assumes every remaining credit carries equal weight, which holds for most US term-based systems but not for programs where the weighting unit is something other than the credit hour. And the required average is a floor, not a schedule — it gives you the number, not a decision about which courses to prioritise.
The UK classification view, and where it is only a proxy
On a UK scale the headline also shows a degree classification band: First (70+), 2:1 (60–69), 2:2 (50–59), Third (40–49), with a fail band below 40. On the percentage scale the course table shows the percentage-to-GPA conversion beside each row's contribution, so you can watch a 68 and a 72 land on opposite sides of the 2:1/First line.

The classification view here is deliberately approximate, and it is the part we would most want you to check against your own programme handbook. UK honours classification is normally weighted by year — many universities count only the later years, or apply weightings such as 25/75 across years two and three — whereas this calculator treats every credit hour as equal. It answers "am I in First territory this term?" well; it is not your institution's official calculation.

How it compares, and where it stops being useful
The trade-off against the alternatives is simple. A spreadsheet gives you unlimited flexibility for unusual policies — grade replacement rules, pass/fail courses, year-by-year weightings — but you have to build and maintain the formula, and one bad cell reference is invisible until it matters. A university portal is authoritative but usually lags: mid-term grades often don't post until the registrar processes them, which is precisely when you want the figure. A dedicated calculator wins on speed — type, read, done.

Where it stops being useful: pass/fail and credit/no-credit courses, which carry credits but no grade points and will distort the average if you assign them a fake grade; programs where the credit hour isn't the weighting unit; and any policy that averages a retake instead of replacing it. Treat the output as a well-formed estimate. Anything that turns on the second decimal — scholarship thresholds, probation limits, graduation checks — deserves a confirmation against your registrar's own calculation.
