How this 2026 tax calculator works

Three steps, no account, no upload.

1 · Enter your income

Gross annual pay and any pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k) or HSA. Deductions are clamped to your gross income so results never go negative.

2 · Pick status & deduction

Choose single, married filing jointly or separately, or head of household. Use the standard deduction or your own itemized total — whichever is larger is applied.

3 · Read the breakdown

You get tax owed, effective and marginal rates, the dollars taxed in each bracket, and per-paycheck take-home for weekly, biweekly or monthly pay.

Tax brackets, credits and the fine print

Why the marginal rate matters

Only the dollars inside a bracket are taxed at that rate. Crossing into a higher bracket never reduces your take-home pay — your effective rate stays well below your marginal rate.

Child Tax Credit

$2,000 per child under 17, reduced by $50 for every $1,000 of income above the phase-out threshold, then limited to the tax you owe. Refundable portions are not modeled.

High earners

Social Security stops at the wage base ($184,500 estimated for 2026) and the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax applies above $200,000 ($250,000 for joint filers).

2026 tax calculator FAQ

Are the 2026 brackets final?

They are inflation-adjusted estimates. When the IRS publishes final 2026 figures they can be updated in one constants table in the code, and every result recalculates automatically.

Does this replace tax software?

No. It is a fast estimate for planning and offer comparison — not a filing tool, and it does not cover every credit or income type.

Why is take-home lower than what I see in my bank account?

Take-home here subtracts federal income tax and FICA only, then divides by your pay frequency. State tax, local tax, wage garnishments, benefit premiums and retirement loans are not included.

Is my salary data stored?

Never. Every calculation runs in your browser with inline JavaScript, so nothing you type leaves your device.

Should I itemize or take the standard deduction?

Compare both. This calculator applies the larger of the two when you select itemized, so you can see the effect immediately — the estimate shown is the one that lowers your taxable income more.
